ABOUT NOSE SURGERY

What is nose surgery/rhinoplasty?

Some call it nose surgery, some nose correction or a nose job, though the correct term is rhinoplasty. Whatever you call it, it refers to a surgical procedure with a goal to improve the functionality and/or the aesthetics of the nose.

Both women and men strive to improve the shape, size and appearance of their nose.

Your nose is a very complex organ.

Apart from being beautiful, the main function of your nose is nasal breathing. So if you have difficulties with breathing or your nose has suffered trauma, a successful rhinoplasty procedure is important.

If your nose is not in harmony with your face, it’s the only thing you notice on your face, right?

That is why the main purpose of nose surgery is to make your nose ‘invisible’.

What does that mean?

Well, it’s the art of making your nose prettier, so that the beauty of your eyes, lips and whole face can come to expression.

Nose surgery is considered to be one of the most difficult plastic procedures.

The nose is composed of bone and cartilage with a thin layer of muscle underneath your skin and fat.

This makes the decision of choosing your surgeon wisely, even more important!

NOSE SURGERY PROCEDURE

Rhinoplasty can be primary (done for the first time) or a revision rhinoplasty (after the procedure is already performed and the result is unsatisfying).

Open Rhinoplasty

This technique involves cutting between nostrils and separating them so the surgeon can reach the bone and the cartilage

Closed Rhinoplasty (Endonasal)

In this technique there are no cuts and visible scars and the healing process is faster but in this type the reposition of the nasal skin is more difficult and visibility is limited for the surgeon.

During the surgery

The approach can be open or closed, depending on the case and on the decision of the surgeon. The decision depends on the anatomical and functional problems of the nose.

Don’t worry, you’ll be informed about the approach he will take on your initial consultation.

Duration of the surgery is approximately 2 hours, depending on the case ad severity of the procedure

Before the surgery

Preoperative tests needed before the surgery

  • Laboratory tests + EKG
  • Medical evaluation done by the anesthesiologist before the surgery to determine if you are fit to go to the surgery (done at the clinic)
  • Final interview with the surgeon to take an overview of your past medical conditions/surgeries and medications you are taking

After the surgery

You will be free to go home the same or the following day. You will have tampons in your nostrils that will be removed the next day so you will be able to breath normally through the nose. After that is removed, you will be advised to rinse the nasal cavity with water and antibacterial ointment for a period of two weeks.

Some swelling and hematoma will be visible after the surgery but it will fully disappear in the next 7 days.

Sometimes, there will be a silicon foil on the inside of the nose, to improve healing and it is removed after 7 days.

You will receive a protective splint after the surgery to avoid hurting new structures and it will stay on for 7 days after the surgery and will be removed with the sutures in the clinic.

You will be provided with the following:

  • Instructions for home care of the surgical site
  • Medications to speed the healing and prevent infection
  • Protective splint for the nose
  • Emergency line open 24h/per day

On the 10th day you can go back to work. Full recovery takes from 3 to 6 months and after a year the process will be completely over.

FAQ’s

FAQ’s Nose surgery

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

The main difference is a small incision made underneath the nose, the skin is pulled up and gives the surgeon the visibility and maneuver space to perform the surgery while in the closed rhinoplasty the procedure is done through the nostrils so there are some limitations and challenges.

Can I combine nose surgery with other aesthetic treatments?

Yes, rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty, facelift, brow lift can be combined and performed at the same time so you don’t have to go under anesthesia twice.

Nose surgery can also be combined with procedures on your teeth, such as teeth veneers, but it is suggested to treat your teeth after the nose surgery to avoid damaging the teeth during the procedure.

How long is the recovery period after the surgery?

Recovery period lasts around 10 days, but you can get back to your low intense activities around the second or the third day, depending how you feel.

The complete recovery will come after 6 months to a year.

Can I go swimming after the surgery?

If you are headed to the sea for recovery, you can go swimming but it is advised not to go snorkeling for at least a month.

When can I expect to see the final result of the surgery?

The result of rhinoplasty can be seen immediately but the final result will be seen after the whole swelling has resolved, and that takes up to one year but after 6 months the swelling is almost unnoticeable.
